New light for the cathedral in Rottweil

After an extensive renovation the cathedral in Rottweil reopened on 3 December, just in time for Advent.

The cathedral in Baden-Württemberg's oldest city not only underwent extensive cleaning, but was also the recipient of a completely new lighting concept developed by Bartenbach lighting solutions that dramatically changes the building's spatial atmosphere. Wall-mounted lights not only provide the nave with ample light, they also help emphasise the vault and its intricate structure of ribs. “This is a quantum leap, and an experiencing of light that we haven't seen before,” says cathedral expert Berthold Hildebrand. The space can be experienced in an entirely new way because the hanging lamps have been removed. “There are no dark corners, and no more shadows. You have a completely new perception of what Gothic means.”

Ring-shaped hanging lights in the aisles illuminate both the vault and the floor area and pews below. Bartenbach lighting solutions was also actively involved in the actual implementation of the new lighting system
