At King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, one of Saudi Arabia's most important air transport hubs, Bartenbach has created an impressive light installation that is not only functional but also a visual masterpiece. Specially designed for the royal family and state guests, the terminal features an innovative lighting concept that transforms the space into a gazebo under a starry sky.
A heavenly illumination for royal guests
The central component of the lighting system is a huge 40 x 40 meter membrane on the ceiling of the terminal, which is reminiscent of a huge tent. This membrane is illuminated by more than 5,000 high-power LEDs embedded in the center of the roof. Their light is directed specifically at a crystal chandelier hanging underneath, which gently distributes the light in the room and ensures uniform illumination.
Traditional design language meets contemporary design: the modern LED luminaires form a decorative ornament.
Technological sophistication and aesthetic elegance
This main lighting is supplemented by over a thousand other light points on the ceiling, which are also equipped with high-power LEDs and special lens technology. These punctual light sources are strategically placed to create the impression of a star-studded night sky, which is particularly effective against the deep blue color of the membrane.
More than just lighting: A total work of art
The entire lighting concept of the terminal is designed to create an atmosphere of calm and exclusivity. The use of direct and indirect light, combined with state-of-the-art LED technology, makes it possible to both meet the functional aspects of lighting and provide an immersive visual experience. The lighting design integrates seamlessly into the overall architecture of the terminal and emphasizes its modern and traditional elements.
Focus on sustainability and efficiency
The airport's lighting system has also been designed with environmental and economic sustainability in mind. The total illuminance of the terminal is an impressive 5.82 W/m², which exceeds the requirements of the LEED guidelines and thus not only offers aesthetic but also environmentally friendly and cost-effective lighting solutions.
The lighting concept designed by Bartenbach at King Abdulaziz International Airport is a prime example of how advanced lighting technology and creative lighting design can come together to not only illuminate space, but also to create an atmosphere that visitors will remember. This project illustrates that good lighting design is an art form that balances technology, aesthetics and functionality.
