A unique lighting concept for a unique location: The Yas Island Marina Hotel in Abu Dhabi is partially situated directly above the Formula 1 racetrack—and is based on a design by Asymptote Architecture from the United States. Bartenbach was responsible for the lighting design for all public areas, including the entrance lobby, VIP areas, viewing platforms, and the hotel’s dining and wellness zones. The lighting specialists succeeded in fully integrating the lighting systems into the architecture, allowing the spatial effect to take center stage. The modern LED lighting systems can be individually controlled in terms of color temperature—ranging from warm white to cool white. This creates different spatial atmospheres with a high degree of flexibility.

More than just a shopping center: “The Playce” is a place for shopping, enjoyment, play, and discovery at Potsdamer Platz. In the heart of the capital, the former “Potsdamer Platz Arkaden” have been extensively revitalized and transformed into a contemporary meeting point for shopping, gastronomy, entertainment, art, and culture. The lighting concept, based on a design by Bartenbach, combines aesthetics and functionality into a spatial experience that invites Berliners as well as visitors to feel at ease and linger. Harmonious light colors, various control groups, and lighting arrangements create a natural flow of movement and integrate “The Playce” seamlessly into the surrounding urban space. The mall’s new name – “The Playce” – feels like a promise: a unique place (“place”) has been created where people come together to interact and play (“play”). Alongside 90 shops and more than 20 dining venues, there is also a multiplex cinema, a casino and arcade, as well as a historic theater building and an art trail (“art trail”).

In Hamburg’s Überseequartier, we were responsible for the lighting design of all public areas—harmoniously balancing natural and artificial light. The goal was to create an atmosphere that equally promotes a pleasant environment, wayfinding, and safety. A particular highlight is the striking columns that support a latticework roof. This structure allows daylight to enter the areas below in a natural way. Artificial lighting is also integrated into the columns, supplementing the natural light when needed and thus ensuring uniform, pleasant brightness. The interplay of architecture and light creates a vibrant yet functional environment. While natural light adds dynamism and natural accents, the integration of artificial lighting ensures reliable brightness even on overcast days and in the evening hours. This results in a flexible lighting concept that adapts to different uses and times of day.

The redesign of Nørreport Station in the Danish capital of Copenhagen transformed what was once a confusing transit hub into a safe, clearly structured, and inviting public space. The goal of the renovation was to facilitate a smooth flow of passengers and intuitive wayfinding, to integrate the station more closely into the urban context, and to make it particularly accessible to cyclists and pedestrians. Bartenbach’s lighting concept underscores the openness and transparency of the newly created urban space. The canopies, bathed in warm light, act as “light magnets” and give the square a clear spatial identity. Eleven striking light columns conceal the necessary ventilation ducts of the underground platforms and intuitively guide passersby across the square at night. Strategically placed light points at the bicycle parking facilities create a soft veil of light that enhances safety and well-being in the public space at night. A project that sets an example: Nørreport Station was awarded the Danish Lighting Award 2016 as well as the Landezine International Landscape Award (LILA) 2017 in the “Public Choice” category.

The use of modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart control systems, for example, offers the opportunity to develop more environmentally friendly solutions. However, the sustainable introduction of such technologies into the market and the continued applicability of developments prove to be heavily dependent on overarching, limiting factors along the entire value chain. Promoting environmental and climate policy efforts therefore requires consideration of the requirements of a wide variety of stakeholder groups. This challenge is now to be addressed on behalf of the BMK as part of the NOBEL project by identifying implementation-related limiting factors along the value chain and thereby systematically exploring the future potential of modern lighting systems for public spaces.

A museum, a training and research center, and a Lindt Chocolateria where chocolate lovers can make their own sweet treats: a multimedia exhibition building has been created at the Lindt & Sprüngli headquarters near Zurich. With its atmospheric lighting design, Bartenbach has highlighted the visitor flow and the quality of the fine cocoa products. Brilliant lighting that perfectly showcases the packaged pralines, bunnies, and bears. But it also creates optimal conditions in the workplace: Lindt employees benefit from high illuminance levels and LEDs with adjustable color temperatures, which create an invigorating lighting environment for people of all ages. The “Maître Chocolatier’s” whisk is staged as an iconic highlight of the visitor center. From the atrium, the lighting guides visitors to a real production line. Here, lighting accents reveal the chocolate-making process: heating, stirring, and uniform cooling. The café serves as the finale: following the cool, elegant appearance of the exhibition spaces, the warmth of the light creates an atmospheric gathering place.

Tradition and modernity, religiosity and secularism in a single, unique building: The Great Mosque of Algiers is the third-largest mosque in the world and boasts the tallest minaret. Opened in 2020, it also houses a conference center, a library, a theological college, and apartments under one roof. Among the lighting highlights of Bartenbach’s design is the illumination of the large prayer hall with natural light. A crystal chandelier with a diameter of 16 meters draws the eye to the light-flooded dome—and distributes the light directly and indirectly throughout the prayer hall. To ensure that a maximum amount of sunlight hits the interior of the dome, the space between the glass façade and the dome is lined with highly reflective material. A ring-shaped array of spotlights with directional light illuminates the crystal chandelier from above: the light is evenly diffused into the room via the glass crystals, giving it a mystical character. The more than 4,000 m² forecourt is illuminated by LED lights. Thanks to their narrow beam angle, the light points are dispersed so that each LED point shines in a different direction. This creates the impression of a fan-like lighting solution that evenly illuminates the entire space.

Islam, one of the world’s most significant religions, manifests its presence in many ways. A remarkable symbol of this significance is the Abraj Al Bait Tower, an impressive structure that has risen in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, in recent years. Standing at an impressive height of 601 meters, the tower rises majestically above the city and symbolizes the spiritual connection of millions of believers. Keeping time in view, the four largest clocks in the world are displayed at a height of 425 meters on the tower’s facade. Their dials measure a remarkable 43 meters in diameter. These timepieces are not only functional instruments but also symbols of the continuity and devotion of the faith. It is not only time that is depicted here in monumental form. Below the imposing clocks, media facades stretch out, visually telling compelling stories and messages. Four such facades, each measuring 70 by 11 meters, have been integrated into the tower’s architecture and shine in vibrant colors. Bartenbach was commissioned to design the lighting technology for these facades. Over a five-year development process, a lighting design emerged that is not only aesthetically appealing but also underscores the spiritual significance of this place. The fusion of technology and aesthetics is also evident in the tower clocks and media facades, which are equipped with approximately two million LEDs. These shine day and night and are visible from a distance of eight kilometers. The lighting elements are seamlessly integrated into the architecture and give the tower a harmonious appearance at any time of day. As the sun moves across the horizon, the lights rest, waiting to shine again at nightfall and bathe the surroundings in a warm light.

The project investigates how material surfaces are visually perceived and how their aesthetic impact is influenced by different lighting conditions. First, materials are systematically classified based on objective, material-specific properties such as warm–cold or smooth–rough. Building on this, the project analyzes how these visual properties are evaluated under different lighting conditions—for example, as attractive or unattractive, high-quality or cheap. Since no established models or evaluation criteria currently exist for the aesthetic impact of materials under varying lighting conditions, the project fills a critical research gap. The goal is to develop a model grounded in the psychology of perception that enables both the classification of material surfaces and the prediction of their aesthetic impact. This is based on extensive empirical studies on material and light perception. In the long term, the project will form the basis for new planning methods, innovative lighting concepts, and the development of high-quality products. The insights gained will thus make an important contribution to improving quality in planning, product development, and material consulting.

The goal was to effectively highlight the distinctive architecture of the office and residential tower while meeting the highest standards of sustainability, safety, and comfort. Particular attention was paid to developing the design principles for the media facade: The concept enables impressive lighting displays without causing glare or light pollution. With precisely controlled artificial lighting, the facade becomes an urban landmark in the evening hours, enhancing the urban space and visible from afar. The exterior lighting follows the same principle: it provides orientation and safety in the immediate vicinity of the tower, yet blends unobtrusively into the overall architectural design. Thus, the lighting design at the Kula Tower combines functional requirements with an iconic appearance—a flagship project of modern urban architecture.

A modern shopping destination that combines a pleasant atmosphere, well-being, and sustainability: For the Itis Mall in Helsinki, we developed the lighting concept for all public areas—featuring a perfect balance of natural and artificial light. At the center is a spacious daylight dome, an architectural highlight that directs natural light deep into the heart of the mall. It creates a bright, welcoming atmosphere that helps visitors find their way and invites them to linger. Daylight plays a particularly important role in shopping centers: it enhances the quality of the environment, supports natural perception, and fosters a relaxed atmosphere. Our lighting design therefore combines glare-free, brilliant daylight with demand-controlled artificial lighting that provides the optimal complement on overcast days or in the evening hours. Carefully selected materials, balanced light colors, and harmonious light distribution create a natural wayfinding experience and give visitors a sense of safety and security. The HSBC headquarters building in Hong Kong is considered an iconic work of the architecture by Norman Foster, distinguished by its open, modular structural system and a central atrium deliberately flooded with natural light. An attractive learning and teaching environment that meets strict sustainability criteria and makes optimal use of natural light: for this, the building on the campus of the Harvard Science and Engineering Complex (SEC) in Boston was awarded LEED Platinum certification. Natural light is particularly important for learning, as it promotes concentration and performance. The goal of Bartenbach’s lighting concept is glare-free, brilliant light to create a pleasant atmosphere and enhance the quality of the space. Material selection, light colors, and light distribution create a natural wayfinding experience and convey a sense of security. Despite the large façade that envelops the building like a cloak, the interior spaces receive ample daylight. An intelligent control system switches on artificial lighting as needed on dark days. Glazed atrium spaces allow natural light to penetrate deep into the building. On the garden façade, horizontal elements direct daylight into the surrounding office spaces. Sophisticated façade elements on the laboratories allow the desired amount of daylight to enter. At the same time, glare is reduced, and the view to the outside is unobstructed.

For the new European Central Bank headquarters in Frankfurt, Bartenbach carried out the comprehensive lighting design for the building, which includes meeting rooms, office spaces, restaurants, and the outdoor area. A particularly exciting highlight in the large meeting room of the ECB Governing Council is the ceiling featuring a 3D relief integrated into the ceiling that depicts a map of Europe—combined with custom-designed luminaires and a coordinated concept for natural and artificial lighting, it creates a unique atmosphere in the room. Furthermore, the Bartenbach lighting concept in the office floors, common areas, and outdoor space ensures functional orientation, visual quality, and a high level of comfort throughout the entire building complex.

A comprehensive lighting concept was developed for the Bridge Pavilion at Expo Zaragoza 2008, integrating architecture and lighting into a single design entity. The goal was to highlight the complex geometry of the bridge structure while providing clear wayfinding for visitors. By integrating glare-free light sources into wall cladding and railings, as well as using linear LED elements in the floor and ceiling, a uniform, guiding light path was created within the interior. The lighting industry faces growing challenges: sustainability, energy efficiency, and the impact of light on human health are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, end users often lack awareness—both of the positive effects of healthy light exposure and existing energy-saving potential, as well as of the negative consequences of inadequate lighting on people and the environment. The EcoLux project investigates whether a serious gaming approach can increase this awareness and trigger concrete behavioral changes. A large-scale population survey will first assess the current level of knowledge. Building on this, a serious game will be developed that specifically integrates concepts from cognitive and motivational psychology. The effectiveness will be evaluated in a controlled laboratory study followed by a field study. The goal is to demonstrate that playful approaches can promote the sustainable and healthy use of light at the individual level and increase awareness of the effects of light.

For the redesign of the outdoor spaces at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, we developed a lighting concept that enhances the atmosphere of the public space while also making it flexible in its use. In close collaboration with Behnisch Architekten and Schulze + Grassov, as well as the lighting manufacturer Trilux, luminaires were selected that were specifically tailored to the project. State-of-the-art Tunable White technology is used in the warm color range from 3000 to 2200 Kelvin (Dim-to-Warm). This creates lighting that sets atmospheric accents, adapts dynamically, and transforms Potsdamer Platz into a lively, safe, and inviting urban space.

The 66,000 m² roof area contains approx. 900 skylights with special lighting design. These ensure an optimal amount of daylight in the departure hall, so there is no need for artificial lighting during the day. The savings in artificial lighting energy alone, 2,400 t of CO₂ emissions are avoided annually. Thanks to the optimised daylight solution, the solar energy input was also kept to a minimum. Lighting accounts for 15–20% of the building sector’s electricity consumption. Integrated artificial and daylight control systems offer significant savings potential, but they are based on generalized assumptions, as individual usage patterns are usually unknown during the planning phase. The resulting performance gaps significantly reduce energy-saving and health benefits. Adjustments during operation are therefore essential, also to be able to respond to changes in usage. The BOREALIS project is developing a reinforcement learning-based control core for this purpose.

An extraordinary lighting solution combining natural and artificial light was implemented for Biogena World. Mirrored daylight domes in the entrance area reflect sunlight and create dynamic lighting effects, while simultaneously bringing a high proportion of natural light into the building. The daylight-based concept promotes visual comfort, well-being, and energy efficiency, and underscores the holistic “Good Health” approach of the location near Salzburg.

The luxury boutique hotel “Beach House by Silversands” is being built in the Caribbean nation of Grenada. Nestled behind a protective rock face on Portici Beach, the Beach House features just 30 rooms, housed in architecturally designed individual suites. Bartenbach developed the lighting concept for all public areas—from the spa area to the restaurant and lobby, and out into the surrounding landscape. The project’s particular challenge: Due to its location in the heart of the Caribbean, the lighting technology is exposed to high humidity. All luminaires must be saltwater-resistant or feature a special protective coating for lifelong durability. For this sophisticated lighting design, Bartenbach relies on contemporary lighting technology that can be individually controlled. Depending on the environment and function, accent lighting is provided—for example, at the bar or in the restaurant. The light colors and moods adapt to the daily routine. In the evening and at dusk, artificial light subtly complements natural light—and underscores the exclusive character of the island resort.

For the 007 Elements exhibition, we developed an integrated lighting concept in close collaboration with the architects and set designers. Through the strategic use of contrasts, accents, and subdued ambient lighting, we shaped the perception of the spaces and enhanced the dramatic effect. Here, light serves not only to illuminate but also as a key design element that creates atmosphere, highlights content, and intuitively guides visitors through the exhibition.
